Upon my first look through Homestyle Vegan, it became very clear to me that the title was dead-on. Page after page is filled with glorious, comforting recipes and with so many photos throughout! Amber has included chapters like “Meals that will stick to your ribs”, “Crowd-pleasers”, “Bake-sale worthy baked goods” (my personal favorite), and “Stock your pantry”.

And, if you’re not into tofu or faux meats, she has prominently displayed on the cover that you will find none of that in this book! Not to mention, many recipes include soy-free and gluten-free options.

While I picked the Holiday Nog because it’s seriously easy-to-make, and perfect for this time of year, I had my eye on some other recipes as well. How good does a Lobster Mushroom Bisque sound? Or Biscuits with Mushroom Gravy? Unnfffff. Maybe the next recipe I make will be the Pumpkin Whoopie Pies, for Thanksgiving? There are tons of great recipes to choose from in here!

Holiday Nog from Fettle Vegan

"The best part of the holidays? All the sweet treats! The worst part of the holidays? All those damn sweet treats! Save the sugar for the cookies and make this naturally sweetened, rich, creamy Holiday Nog to satisfy your sweet tooth instead. It's free of eggs and much lighter than the original--guilt-free, too!" Author Amber St. Peter

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup raw cashews 75g
  • 1 cup hot water 240ml
  • 1 1/2 cups unsweetened almond milk 360ml
  • 1 cup canned full-fat coconut milk, 276ml
  • 4 to 6 Medjool dates pitted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Rum optional
  • cloves Whole for garnish

Instructions

  1. In a small bowl, soak the raw cashews in the hot water for at least 30 minutes. Drain.
  2. Pour the soaked cashews, almond and coconut milks, dates, vanilla, cinnamon, cloves and salt into a high-speed blender and blend until creamy. You can strain it through a cheesecloth if you like, but I love how creamy this drink is and didn't bother straining. Serve cold with rum (if you like!) and garnish with whole cloves.

  1. This sounds amazing and Homestyle Vegan sounds like my type of cookbook!!!

  2. I have a Vegan Daughter and Granddaughter! It would be perfect to have a cookbook that I could use to prepare meals for Holidays that they will be able to enjoy too! I’m also on my way to becoming Vegan myself! I’m learning!

  3. This looks yum! Can’t wait to give it a go when I make us a lovely thanksgiving feast! Obviously will be including the rum! Haha… I’ve only just transitioned from Pescatarian to Vegan in the last 2 and a half to 3 months, it’s been relatively easy but would be fantastic to have a book like this that has recipes that would appeal to all.

  4. I grew up in the south so, even though giving up cheese proved easier than I thought, I miss good ol’ fashioned homestyle food occasionally. Biscuits and gravy, yes please!

  5. as much as i love my veggies, comfort foods are still my favorites! thnaks for the giveaway!

  6. I’m always looking for vegan recipes to share with my family around the holidays and this seems like the perfect thing! And who can say no to a good nog? Can’t wait to try it out!

  7. It appeals to me because my mom and I are trying to more “real” foods and less processed vegan foods.

  8. We love comfort food and the recipes in this book sound like they’ll really hit the spot. =)

  9. This book seems like it’s full of recipes that will appeal to omnivores and fellow vegans alike. I am all about the crowd-pleasers!

  10. Sounds like a beautiful book. My husband is convinced there is no such thing as yummy vegan nog; I hope this recipe will convince him otherwise!

  11. I’m an omnivore, but i cook for a vegan, and try to avoid too many milk products for myself. This sounds like an even better treat than the silk version.

  12. This book appeals to me because I am always looking for homestyle vegan recipes

  13. This is the perfect book for vegans to sway the nay sayers. Comfort food for all!

  14. What I like most about this cookbook is that it combines the notion of “homestyle” with “vegan.” Sometimes, the two don’t seem connected. Here, they intersect beautifully, and I love that.

  15. That nog looks awesome. As you point out, I like that this cookbook doesn’t rely on tofu and other faux meats. I try to cook with natural, whole foods that have not been processed. Vegan comfort food is my favorite way to show non-vegans how delicious plant based food is

  16. I had to make this as soon as I saw it! & it is sooooo delicious! I’ve tried store bought vegan bogs before, & never liked them enough to get the same kind twice. But this recipe was awesome, & I will never need to try a store bought kind again!!
