Product Review: Unsweetened Vanilla Ripple Pea Milk

New Product Review! Unsweetened Vanilla Ripple Pea Milk - High in protein, zero sugar, and allergy-friendly! #vegan #soyfree #nutfree #ripplefoods #dairyfreedom

After the success of the last product review I did, I thought it’d be super helpful for me to fit these in every once in a while! For this review, I’m covering a brand new product from Ripple Foods. Like, so new that it’s not even on their site yet! And the newcomer to their line of non-dairy milks is the Unsweetened Vanilla Ripple Pea Milk.

If you’ve not heard of Ripple, allow me to give you some background on them! The founders come from backgrounds of innovation, sustainability, and creation. One was a cofounder of Method (the popular soap brand), and the other has made breakthrough after breakthrough in the scientific community, then eventually got into sustainable food.

In 2015, the two created Ripple Foods with plant-based milks, that were tasty, but also nutritious. That being said, two things set their products apart from what’s on the market already. It’s vegan milk made with yellow peas! So, that was kind of weird for me, at first; because I don’t associate those two things. And because of the pea blend they use, “Ripptein“, each milk is high in protein. As much as 8g per serving! Peas also use less water in production, than almonds, which is something to consider.

I have to say, for a while I didn’t check this line of products out, even though I had heard good things from others. I just wasn’t too sure about the pea thing! But now, I’m kind of obsessed. To be thorough, I tried the Unsweetened Vanilla Ripple Pea Milk in a variety of applications, including by itself. So, let me take you through my process, and feedback.

1st test: A la carte

The high protein content gives this Unsweetened Vanilla Ripple Pea Milk a great mouth feel, when sipped out of a glass. Some non-dairy milks can feel slimy right out of the carton because they have a watery base with a lot of thickeners to plump it up. This was not the case here! Smooth, not grainy, while the vanilla taste was subtle. Another thing I like about this pea milk, is that not only is it unsweetened, it has ZERO sugar. Some unsweetened milks still have a couple of grams, in them.

2nd test: In Cold Brew Coffee

As we all know, it’s summer and it’s hot! So, I’ve been switching back and forth between hot and cold coffee, so that I don’t melt. I had some cold brew on hand, and thought I’d capture that sexy moment when milk hits iced coffee. Here, you can really tell the difference in density between the two liquids. The Unsweetened Vanilla Ripple Pea Milk mostly sank to the bottom, but was easily stirred in. I also noted that the milk didn’t separate after sitting for a bit! I really liked the product in this application, because it tasted pleasant but wasn’t too heavy.

3rd test: In a Smoothie

For this test, I didn’t want to get too wild with the smoothie ingredients, so I stuck to the basics. I blended up ripe banana, frozen berries and about 1 cup of this milk. The fruits kept the smoothie sweet, and the pea milk added a nice creaminess to it. But, being that the vanilla flavor is subtle, I didn’t really come through for me in this. I do think it’s great for smoothies because of the added protein!

4th test: In Oatmeal

To be practical, I thought it’d be good to use this in a quick breakfast, like oatmeal. Typically, when I make it for a regular weekday (i.e. not for the blog), I follow a ratio of 1:1:1 of oats to water to non-dairy milk. Then I add in maple syrup and fruits/nuts. This is what I did with this batch, though I did end up adding more milk to get it really creamy.

When cooking the liquids and oats, the vanilla became very aromatic and the addition of maple syrup amplified it a bit. After I stirred in the fresh and dried fruit, I transferred it into a bowl and topped it with more milk. This was my favorite way to eat oatmeal, as a kid, because it cooled down the hot grains. I will definitely be making oatmeal with this milk again! And again, because there is no sweetener, you can really take control over your level of sweetness.

5th test: Hot Cocoa

Honestly, this one was a bit of an accident. I already had this post together and then was making hot cocoa for a photography assignment. So, I thought, hell, I’ll see how this works! I simmered water, cocoa powder, and maple syrup together, then took it off of heat and whisked in the Unsweetened Vanilla Ripple Pea Milk. It gave it a rich base, and complimented the bitterness of the cocoa. Even better with some coconut whip, on top. 😉

Unsweetened Vanilla Ripple Pea Milk Overall:

If you’re looking for a multi-purpose, non-dairy milk, this one is great! The nutrition profile is better than a lot of the products on the market (including dairy milk), and it’s easy to find. It’s especially awesome if you are looking for a way to add more protein to the foods you’re already eating, in a nut-free way.

  1. I’ve been falling out of love with almond milk recently. Thanks for the awesome review! I’m picking this stuff up the next I go grocery shopping.

    • My pleasure! And agreed, Almond is usually my go-to, but I’m so loving this and it’s creaminess.

  2. I thought I’d scored when I saw this milk on a recent holiday. I wanted to try it so badly but the price is cost prohibitive to purchase often (I’m in Canada) and it has oil added to it which I don’t like in non-dairy milks. That’s probably why it tastes so rich and creamy. I made rice pudding with it for company but found it has a really strange smell when cooked. Plus the packaging…

  3. I heard about this from a friend. I’m a little late finding it. I’m absolutely going to try it.
I notice you had marshmallows pictured in the hot chocolate pic. What vegan brand do you recommend?
