Hangover Cure Smoothie in a clear glass, filled to the brim

If I told you that I had partied a little too hard last night celebrating the start of Vegan MOFO, I’d be lying. Don’t get me wrong, I’m obviously excited for it, but this was a case of karaoke bar+liquid courage=grumpy/hungover Jackie. Oh, the repercussions for having a hilarious and fun night.

This is what leads me into this amazing smoothie/shake; I found myself quickly “researching” ie. googling, foods that cure hangovers and came across an article on How Stuff Works. After glancing at it and seeing bananas, I knew that I had a mission to complete. And that mission was to make an amazing banana smoothie. One so thick that you’d have to eat it with a spoon!

Hangover Cure Smoothie

Yield: 1 16 ounce serving
Prep Time: 5 minutes
Total Time: 5 minutes

  • 2 Frozen Bananas, peeled and sliced
  • 4 Small Dates or 2 Large Medjool Dates, pitted
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons Smooth Peanut Butter
  • 1 Tbsp. Chia Seeds
  • 1/2 Cup Hemp Milk, or Other Non-Dairy Milk
  • 1/4 Cup Water, to thin down the mixture

  1. Place all ingredients in a high-speed blender. Puree until completely smooth, adding more water if necessary. Set aside for approx. 3-5 minutes so that the chia seeds can break down a little bit more and you can absorb their nutritional benefits more easily.
  2. Enjoy the hell out of it because this is seriously one of the best smoothies I've ever made/had!

Use coconut water instead of water to add even more electrolytes to this smoothie!

Pouring a smoothie into a clear glass

This Hangover Cure Smoothie is super filling, so just know that you won’t be needing to eat anything for a while after this. You can see above that this thing was thick, I ate it with a spoon/gulped it down and in my mind, it was perfect. I used to make many variations of banana/chocolate/peanut butter smoothies when I was younger. So, this recipe definitely brought me back to that time and really hit the spot.

  1. WOW. That smoothie looks so good! I love the idea of adding peanut butter to it! Can’t wait to try one for myself!

    • I am a peanut butter FIEND, so I almost felt obligated to add it. πŸ˜‰

  2. I can’t eat bananas/am highly allergic/they make me want to die SO…. do you think there is an alternative to bananas that I could use in this smoothie? It sounds awesome πŸ™‚ Thanks!

    • That is a tough question! But, I may have a solution; the taste will be quite different but the outcome should be super delicious. Try apples! Especially because right now they are in their peak season. If you do try it I would do something like this:

1 Large or 2 Small Apples cored and chopped (not frozen)
1/2 Cup Non Dairy Milk + Water if your blender needs it to blend
      1 Tbsp. Chia Seeds
      1 Heaping Tbsp. Peanut Butter
      Maybe 2 pitted dates
      6 or 7 Ice Cubes

Blend those up and see how it tastes, also let me know if you do! πŸ™‚

      • I totally didn’t realize you responded to my request and in looking back at your most popular recipes of 2011 realized that you DID. I am going to try it this week and will let you know how it turns out! you are amazing, thank you!!

    • I went through serious banana issues a couple of months ago – couldn’t have one without dying in pain. You could try adding 1-2 peeled oranges to this smoothie. And, if you’re trying to replace the creaminess in recipes that generally call for mashed bananas, you can use avocado! πŸ™‚

  3. Well even though mangoes are sorta expensive that would also give you the creaminess. JACKIE I WANT MOAR DATES.

    • Mangoes would be great for texture, but I’m not too sure on how they’d pair up with peanut butter. ha ha! Also, the Long Beach Farmer’s market has a vendor there that sells 4 different kinds of date, and the are all INCREDIBLE!

      • I go to 7hotdates.com to get my dates. if going through a lot of them I’d say its an ok price.

      • You could use Almond Butter instead, since the mango is related to the almond, and the taste is sweeter and lighter.

  4. Ooh, I’m gonna have to try this recipe very soon! I love peanut butter.

  5. I think it looks delish now but I think that it would be really hard to get down with a hangover!

  13. I’m not a big alcohol person or peanut butter so i made this with cashew butter and this is fantastic. I’m just a couple years late to the party lol, but genius-ness is timeless, right? Because that’s what you did here. πŸ™‚

    • Good to know and glad that you enjoyed it! πŸ™‚

    • Also, it doesn’t matter if you’re late, as long as you still had fun! πŸ˜‰
