When you don’t have time to make elaborate breakfast recipes, and want to be on the healthier side, a great smoothie recipe is the way to go. This Dessert for Breakfast Smoothie is rich and delicious, but also nutritious! It doesn’t hurt that smoothies are very easy to make, either.

Using frozen banana chunks in this recipe balances out the bitter cocoa with their natural sweetness. While creamy peanut butter adds some body to this breakfast, and chia seeds offer more fiber and protein.
Of course, you can easily customize this Dessert for Breakfast recipe to your preferences! Try using sunbutter instead of PB for a nut-free version. Or, add a handful of baby spinach for more iron. Some of you may be looking for an even higher protein content. If that’s you, try leaving out the cocoa powder, and using a scoop of chocolate protein powder instead.
Dessert For Breakfast Smoothie

When you don’t have time to make elaborate breakfasts, and want to be on the healthier side, this Dessert for Breakfast smoothie recipe is the way to go!
Ingredients
- 1 large frozen banana, peeled and chopped
- 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 1 1/2 tablespoons creamy natural peanut butter
- 1 tablespoon chia seeds
- 1 tablespoon hemp seeds
- 1/2 Cup Water or Non-Dairy Milk
- 6 ice cubes, optional
Instructions
Place all ingredients in a blender, add more liquid if needed, and puree until smooth. Let still for 3 minutes and blend again to fully break down the chia seeds.
Notes
Sub the cocoa powder for a 1/2 scoop of your favorite, vegan chocolate protein powder for a bump in protein!

UPDATE: I first made this smoothie back in 2011, when I was pretty new to food and very new to veganism. As you can see, I used Hershey Cocoa Powder here. But, if you’re able to, please buy fair trade cocoa instead!
